[FIC] Soulmates: Selene

Title: Soulmates: Selene
Characters: Eunhyuk, Jo Kwon, SJ, 2AM, OC
Rating: PG
Chaptercount: 16/22
Summary: One unexpected yet scheduled meeting brings with it the start of so much more.
A/N: The first story I wrote with Super Junior in it lol. I was a bit of a fan at that time and Hyukjae was the first member of Super Junior I knew. I gradually learned more about them as I wrote this story so if some things don't add up at all, don't blame me lol.

“Leave him alone.” she said. Like always, her sudden appearance and calm behaviour made the others listen to her. Kyuhyun let go of Top’s collar, who, without a single sign of disturbance, just walked over to Hyukjae and sat down next to him.

“Hyung.” he started off, talking softly, obviously meaning to only be heard by Hyukjae. Meanwhile K’Ae was talking to the other three and calmly answering their ‘how did you do that’ questions. Donghae was still sitting with his friends, slowly stroking Hyukjae’s back in hopes of calming him down. He had never seen his friend in this kind of situation before. “Do not despair.” Top went on, managing to get Hyukjae’s attention, who shifted his attention from K’Ae to Top. “Them being soul mates does not mean that you will lose her. She knew you first, loved you first, loved you a lot. K’Ae has told you that it is possible for soul mates to become like family or very good friends. No one has ever said you will lose her. We are simply trying to make you aware of this, because if you let her spend all her time with him, you probably will lose her after all. Have you not learned anything about Selene in the year you have been with her?”

He wanted to get angry at this arrogant dongseng, but he simply did not have the energy for it. Did he learn nothing about her? He knew she could have a very bad temper, just like Heechul. He knew to get her to do something, he just had to tell her to and she would listen. At least that’s what she had told him once, but he had never really believed it and had never tried it either. She was such a dominating person in life, so how could she be willing to follow him in the relationship then? Yet, had she not said it herself? Did she not say she wanted to depend on someone as well. Did she not tell him about this Jo Kwon person, how he always took the lead and how she liked that? How it made her able to relax a bit and just follow. Had she not said that felt nice? So should he just go up to her and tell her to spend more time with him? But that sounded so arrogant. If she didn’t feel like spending time with him, then who was he to tell her to?

“I never knew you were such a baby in your mind, Hyukkie.” Donghae mumbled. It was only when hearing those words that he realized he had been mumbling his thoughts out loud. “Just tell her to and if she doesn’t want to, she’ll say so, end of story. You seriously think too much about such things. Especially because it’s Selene. Yes is yes and no is no with her, there is no ‘maybe’ in her dictionary.” Ouch. How pitiable is it when your friend knows more about your girlfriend than you do? He sighed and sat up a little better, wiping the tears from his face, only to sigh again. Donghae smiled and cleaned his face with a tissue, something he appreciated.

“Mianhe for grabbing you like that, hyung.” Kyuhyun suddenly said, bowing at Top. The latter only smiled and waved the apology away.

“It’s okay. I understand why you did it. I would kill anyone who touched one of my members as well.” he replied, showing that it was no big deal. Kyuhyun seemed relieved as he retreated back to Sungmin, Ryeowook and Yesung. It became a lot less hectic in the room and the troubles seemed to have cleared. “I think we should go.” Top then said, getting up from the ground. K’Ae was at his side in seconds, clutching his arm like her life depended on it. Maybe it did. Maybe she really needed him to survive. He should actually be happy that Selene wasn’t dead yet, so she wasn’t depending on that Jo Kwon person. The mere thought of that guy made him angry. He was the starter of all this crap.

“Annyeong.” he mumbled as goodbye to K’Ae. She smiled at him as she walked away with her boyfriend. It was strange to think he was a famous idol as well. He looked so totally normal. Except for the fact that there was a ghost walking next to him of course.

To put it the easy way, Hyukjae was confused. Ghosts, soul mates, dead people, moving on, trying to find each other,.. It all sounded like a big bunch of nonsense, yet K’Ae had proven that it wasn’t. Anyhow, he still expected a hidden camera to reveal itself any moment. The whole situation was just too ridiculous. He’d rather just go to bed, fall asleep and open his eyes to the normal world again.

Slowly he crawled up from the ground, being helped by Donghae as he did so. While dragging himself to the sofa, he wiped away the remaining tears on his face. He took a few deep breaths, clearing his head and trying to give everything its place. As he let himself fall down on the couch, his four dorm mates sat down with him, while Donghae went to sit down on the ground in front of him. It was only when looking at his best friend that he started wondering what exactly the guy was doing on the eleventh floor, but he decided it didn’t really matter at that very moment.

“Tell us, Hyukkie.” Donghae calmly said, letting his hands rest on Hyukjae’s knees. “What’s going on? Who was that guy and how did that girl appear out of nowhere?” Hyukjae looked at his friend for a while without talking, wondering what he could and should tell them. In the end he realized half the story wouldn’t do and he would just have to tell everything. With a little sigh he started at the very beginning telling them all about the whole ghost-soulmates-afterlife-nonsense. They listened without saying a word, but he didn’t know if they believed him or not. When he finished, however, he was given the answer to that question.

“So you believe all this?” Donghae asked in a serious tone. He hesitated with his answer.

“Well, K’Ae was quite convincing when she appeared out of nowhere, wasn’t she? And I have seen her bond with this Top guy. They are definitely connected somehow.” he tried to explain his reasons.

“So you believe it?” his friend confirmed.

“Yes. I think I do.”

“Then I do too.” was Donghae’s simple statement.

“And so do we.” the other four added. He couldn’t help smiling because of his loyal friends. They were supporting him even though all this seemed like nothing but deceive and lies.

“She indeed was convincing.” Sungming mumbled, obviously thinking back at the moment where K’Ae had appeared out of nowhere. They had all seen the girl before, as she had been around on shows’ backstage a lot, but none of them had ever really known her. Her being a ghost did explain a lot, though.

“And scary.” Kyuhyun suddenly said. His words made them all laugh and Hyukjae was able to finally let go of the last little bits of stress in his body. “So what are you waiting for?” the youngest then asked.

“What?” Even though he was slowly regaining his normal composure, his mind still was a little cloudy and the meaning of his friend’s words wasn’t really clear to him.

“Call her!” Call who? K’Ae? What would he call that girl for? He had just seen her moments ago. Besides, he didn’t really want to talk to her. He didn’t feel like getting more weird news. Next thing he knew, his mother might actually be an alien from Jupiter, and even if that were so, he would rather not know anything about it. It would only interest him if she planned on eating him or something like that. They could tell him about her then, but not any moment sooner. He had heard enough fictional mumbo jumbo for the following ten years at the very least.

“Selene, babo.” Donghae said, when he noticed his friend was somewhere else with his thoughts again. “Call her.” Right. Of course. Call Selene. That made sense. Call her and get her away from that monkey who stole half of her soul. He would teach that piece of chimpanzee to leave other people’s girlfriends alone and find his own. The thought of Jo Kwon made him completely snap out of the misty haze he had been in and he grabbed his phone out of his pocket. Before he could dial Selene’s number, however, he noticed a message on his screen. He frowned and started reading it.

‘Please remember that they do not know yet what you know now. They are drawn to each other without knowing why. They just meet up because it feels like the right thing to do. Don’t hate him for it.’ He noticed the message didn’t say ‘them’ but just ‘him.’ He couldn’t help smiling, yet realized at the same time that K’Ae must know more about him than he originally thought she did. For some reason, he saved the message before dialling Selene’s number. He was pleased when hearing Wonder Boy as her ringtone. At least she didn’t use a 2AM song yet. Yet..

“Hello Hyukjae.” she said when picking up, putting a stop to the negative spiral his thoughts were ready to fall down into again. He immediately smiled upon hearing her voice, as she had sounded happy and relaxed, unlike the stressed ‘hi’ she would give whenever she was very busy. That meant she had time to talk to him. “Why are you calling?” Ugh, like he needed a reason to call her!

“I want to see you.” he replied.

“But Hyukjae, I told you I don’t have time today.” she said, sounding like she was talking to a little kid. What was she thinking, treating him like a baby?

“Nonsense. Why wouldn’t you have time for your boyfriend?” he protested. “You’re still in the same hotel, right? I’ll go there and wait for you. All evening if I have to.”

“Hyukjae, don’t be silly. I’ll be gone all evening.” she replied, sounding a little worried.

“Will you still be gone all evening when I’m waiting for you?”

“Hyukkie..” she started pleading, but he didn’t let her finish.

“I’ll see you there.”

As he hung up, he felt a certain happiness coming over him. The feeling like his day couldn’t be ruined anymore. He recognized it as a normal reaction of his mood after being down, but still it felt great. He got up from the couch and walked to his room to change into a little more fit clothes. The five boys who had been sitting around him watched him go with smiles on their faces, feeling relieved that their friend was okay again. He had gone through a lot in the past few weeks and they had all been surprised about how long he had let Selene simply go out with Jo Kwon and kind of ignore him. It was good that he was going to change that.

Selene sighed as she heard the click when Hyukjae hung up. She looked at her phone a few moments, before putting it away and looking up at Jo Kwon who she had been drinking some tea with. He smiled at her and she smiled back. In a relatively short time they had become very close, discovering how alike they were and how compatible. Where Hyukjae would let her be, Jo Kwon often annoyed her, yet seemed to feel exactly when he went too far and avoided it. He had also told her that he easily got bored with other people, but she never stopped being interesting to him. They could easily have hour-long conversations without ever running out of things to talk about. She felt really comfortable with him and he didn’t seem to have any problems with being around her either. To her, he had become a precious friend, a very close friend, something to the likes of an older brother.

“Mianhe oppa.” she said, as she started gathering her stuff. “As you might have heard, Hyukjae is going to camp at my hotel room, so I have to go.”

“Why do you have to go?” he replied, giving her a surprised look. “Can’t you just let him sit there? It’s his choice, why would you have to go.” She smiled, but already shook her head before he had finished talking.

“He is my boyfriend. Of course I will go and see him when he asks me to.”

“It sounded more like demanding than asking.” he pouted. She chuckled.

“You of all people should know.” she simply said, getting up from her chair. He sighed.

“Yah, I know. Demanding works better than asking when it comes to getting you to do something. I still don’t understand how you can be like that.” He got up as well, to guide her to the door. She walked into the living room first, however, to say goodbye to the other members. As she passed them, leaning closer and hugging them with one arm, she felt how Jo Kwon followed her with his eyes. She hugged Jinwoon as last, smiling at him and giving a soft squeeze in his upper arm.

“Take care, Jinwoon-ssi.” she said, smiling. “Don’t let your hyungs bully you. Remember, maknae power!” He laughed softly.

“I will remember, noona.” he said. “But it’s not like I can take on all three of them.”

“Of course you can. Everything is possible as long as you want it.” With those words she turned away from him and walked out of the room, past Jo Kwon. He followed her to the door, where they said goodbye as well. She gave him a short hug, before letting go again already. He smiled at her and she could only smile back. “Say hi to Gain unni from me, if you will.” she said. He nodded.

“I will.”

“And next time we meet up, I want to introduce you to Hyukjae. I’m guessing if I don’t, he’ll explode pretty soon about me spending all my time with you and almost no time with him.” Jo Kwon shook his head.

“The way you talk about that guy gets me wondering why you’re still together with him.” he said, giving her a disapproving look. She sighed.

“Because I love him, of course.” was her reply, while turning around to walk away. He stopped her by grabbing her wrist and pulled her back for another hug.

“Of course.” he said softly. “Don’t be angry at me, meimei.” Upon hearing the Japanese word he had started using to address her, she felt her annoyance immediately melt away and she put her arms around him again as well to hug him back. With a smile on her face, she let go of him again. He held onto her with one arm a moment longer to give her a kiss on her forehead. She kept smiling, but felt the blood rush up to her cheeks. For that reason she quickly turned around and walked to the elevator to leave. Behind her she heard him call out a last ‘goodbye’ so she shortly looked around to reply with the same, but in Japanese.

When she arrived at her hotel room, Hyukjae was already sitting in front of the door. His back rested against the wall, his head leaning against the door. He smiled when he saw her and got up from the ground to hug her. She let him hug her, but didn’t hug back as she immediately opened the door to her room. No way she was going to hug him in the middle of a hotel hall. There was too much of a chance that someone would pass by and recognize him. For that reason she quickly dragged him in and closed the door of her room behind her. Only then did she feel more at ease.

“Aish. Did you really have to do that? I was going to the movies with Jo Kwon oppa. Don’t you have any respect for what I want to do?” she grumbled, while locking the door. She didn’t really mean the words, she just had to complain a little about his sudden call. When she turned around, however, he was looking at her with a strange expression on his face. She stopped in her tracks to look at him a few moments, before she walked on to drop her bag on the bed.

When she turned around at him again, she was shocked to see tears blinking in his eyes. Surprised, she rushed back towards him.

“What? Hyukjae? What’s wrong? Did something happen” she asked worried. Her words only made the tears in his eyes start rolling down over his cheeks. Worried and shocked she stepped closer to wipe away the tears, but he pushed away her hand.

“Why?” he asked, crying tears of sadness that wouldn’t stop coming. “I love you so much. Why do you do this to me?” She hadn’t expected his tears or his despair, but now that she was seeing it so clearly, she felt how her own eyes started to tear as well. “I want to give you everything. If that is what you want, I’ll leave the band for you. You know that you are the most important thing to me. We might not always agree on everything, but in the end it’s you that I will listen to first whenever I’m unsure. Have we not spent a year together? Have we not made up every time? Why do you do this to me now?” She hadn’t even noticed he had taken her hands in his until she wanted to take his. Being unable to grasp what exactly he was talking about, she took a deep, shivering breath before replying.

“Oppa..” she said, using the word she hardly ever used to call him. Even though she wanted to add ‘What are you talking about?’, no words came out anymore as she lost her voice due to the pain she felt. Tears were starting to pile up in her eyes, blurring her vision, but none found their way over her cheeks yet.

“I was ready to go on with you. I have even thought about marrying you and having children with you later on. That vision was something I found strength in, knowing that I would be together with you, no one to tear us apart. We would go to work like normal people and see our kids off to school. We would have some fights, but in the end, we would still be together when our kids would already have husbands and wives. We would be sitting on the front porch on a little bench and look out over our little garden, enjoying the last days of our old life together. I pictured this to be my future. With you. I would do anything for you, so why?” he continued as if he hadn’t heard the one word she had said. She really wanted to reply, but wasn’t able to because of the tears that finally started running down her face and the pain that seemed to have assembled in her throat. Her brain was trying to understand what his words meant. It sounded like they were breaking up, but he didn’t want to. It sounded like she had just broken up with him, yet she was sure she hadn’t done something like that. No possible reason for him to be like this came up in her.

“Hyukkie..” she finally managed to choke out. He let go of her hand to wipe away her tears, a loving act that only made her hurt worse. What was going on? Why was he doing this to her? Was this a prank? Secret camera? Something like that? Without realizing, her eyes scanned the surroundings but there were no places for a camera to be hidden. This was a hotel anyway and there was no way for him to have gotten a key to her room. Besides, he would never do such a thing to her unless all the other members were involved as well, which they weren’t. Thinking such rational thoughts finally made her able to calm down enough to talk. “Hyukkie, what are you talking about? I love you. I would love to sit on a bench on the front porch with you when our hair is gray and our legs have lost their strength. I don’t even care if we will be looking at our little garden or at the neighbourhood’s dumping ground. How can you say such things? What why?” Her words seemed to stun him as well, even though they just gradually got through to him. It was only after spilling some more tears that he was able to reply.

“You spend so much time with that Jo Kwon. Every day I wait for you to tell me it’s over between us. Every day I wait for a call, or maybe even just a text, telling me you’re sick of me or that you don’t love me anymore. And now you say such things. Why do you do this to me? Does what we have been through mean nothing to you?” he sniffed. Suddenly she grasped the whole situation. A huge relief took over her body and despite her tears and pain, she couldn’t help laughing. It startled Hyuk-jae even more than her questions had done, making him stare at her in surprise, the tears still running down his cheeks. With a much more confident feeling, she pulled free from his grip, only to softly put her hands on his cheeks. With her thumbs she wiped away some of the tears, pressing a little kiss on his lips.

“Oh Hyukkie..” she mumbled, letting her forehead rest against his. He seemed to be in some sort of shock, not understanding anything of what was going on, something she could fully relate to. “My dearest.. Did you never listen? How many times have I told you that I love you?”

“But you always talk about Jo Kwon oppa this, Jo Kwon oppa that and..” he started to reply. She didn’t let him finish the sentence in order to get rid of his misunderstandings as soon as possible.

“Oppa, yes. Exactly. Listen to me. Jo Kwon is my oppa, my older brother. Nothing more than that. There is nothing you should be afraid of when it comes to him. Why did you jump to conclusions so fast? Have I ever shown you that my feelings changed? I can’t have, because they didn’t.” She pulled her head back a bit to look him in the eyes and softly stroke his cheek with her hand.

“You spent so much time with him in the past months..” he uttered softly, seemingly starting to calm down by her sincere words.

“Yes I did.”

“Why did you do that?”

“Did you mind?” Her eyes wandered over his face, trying to find any trace of what was going on in his mind at the moment. He remained silent for a while, probably deciding if he should say the truth or not.

“Yes.” he finally mumbled.

“Then why didn’t you tell me that? Remember what I told you back at your dorm after the Star King recording? If you tell me not to, I won’t. As long as you don’t stop me, I assume it’s fine with you. You should have just told me.” she immediately replied, taking his hand in hers again.
