[FIC] Memories

Title: Memories
Characters: Super Junior
Rating: R
Chaptercount: 14/26
Summary: Fifteen people try to find the memories they forgot - or maybe they're just looking for each other.
A/N: A fic written on a hunch. One day I thought; "Super Junior. And vampires. This calls for a fic!" and well.. Here we are? Memories is one of the stories that I'm proud of, despite its sometimes messy storyline. It's also a story that won't be fully understood until you've read it completely. Things will be very confusing as you read, but will also get explained in future chapters. Be warned.

Donghae immediately rushed over to the collapsed vampire, afraid of what went on. He had told the other to remember, after all, but not to die. Or was that the same? His fingers checked for a pulse, only to remember the other was a vampire so there would be none. With worried eyes, Kyuhyun and Jongwoon also watched their fallen companion, so Youngwoon made use of the opportunity to sneak out of the room, leaving the others behind. He was near the elevator already when his feet turned him around and made him walk back, even though he tried to fight it.

He was stunned to find the scene inside of the hotel room had completely changed. Donghae and Ryeowook were sitting on Donghae’s bed, both looking at the floor, whereas Jongwoon stood at the window, looking outside as he stayed out of the sun. Kyuhyun had his back pressed to the wall, enraged eyes glaring at Jongwoon’s back, his mouth moving without sound. Suddenly Ryeowook looked up, and blood red eyes pierced into Youngwoon’s.

“Sit down. On the other bed.” the order came, and Youngwoon found himself moving accordingly, sitting down on the edge of the bed he had previously occupied. Ryeowook didn’t follow him with his eyes, nor did Donghae, who merely stared at the ground. Jongwoon merely turned to look at him, eyes unreadable. For a moment there was a tense silence in the room, but then someone sighed and Jongwoon turned away again.

“Kyuhyun, you’re free to go.” he then said, and the next moment, the lanky vampire had crossed the room and taken his the elder’s hand to hold it out into the sun. Both their hands sizzled when he pulled them back, which seemed to be exactly his point.

“We burn, Jongwoon.” he hissed then. He was trying to be silent, but they all understood him clearly anyway. “I want to know why they don’t. At all. Something’s not right, okay. They were our friends but maybe they changed. You don’t know. You can’t know. Maybe I was a lucky guess when you got me to remember. Others might not be okay with it all, might not accept the past as reality and might try to kill you. Why are you rushing into this without a single clue?” He let go of the other’s hand then, frown still creasing his forehead. “And next time you pin me against a wall, you’re dead.”

Youngwoon was surprised to hear the sincerity in the vampire’s words, an actual promise of death. He would’ve thought the two were totally on the same team, but now they were proving him that apparently they were far from on the same line. He didn’t get much time to think it through, because a silent order from Ryeowook made him lie down on the bed and close his eyes.

A low growl escaped him before he could help it, the feeling of being unable to fight against whatever was making him do the things he did too much for him to deal with. He tried to fight against the invisible restraints keeping him on the bed, but it was as if his muscles were locked in place. He growled again, but with his eyes closed there was nothing he could do to figure out what the others were doing. A hand on his shoulder made him get highly cautious, but he recognised Donghae’s smell from spending the past month with him.

“Hyung, remember everything, but less painfully than I did.” Ryeowook’s voice then spoke. Surprisingly it was said much softer and friendlier than the vampire had sounded when they had first talked. Something very lethal about the other having disappeared. He also didn’t get any time to think about that, however, because without a warning his conscience blacked out and his body relaxed on the bed.

They hadn’t travelled that long yet, when suddenly a hand was risen and they came to a stop. Eyes scanned their surroundings and they carefully slipped into an alley, right before a few people passed by. They remained unseen in the dark, a mere part of the shadows. Suddenly another shape slipped into the same alley and if it hadn’t been for the invisible ties keeping him silent and still, Zhou Mi would have either attacked or killed the newcomer. But Heechul did none of that, allowed none of that. Instead, he seemed to visibly relax as he stepped forward a little.

“Hey you.” he said so softly that it almost scared Zhou Mi. Heechul was never this nice unless he was raging underneath. He had discovered that first hand in the past few weeks of travelling together with the elder. But then the weirdest words ever left Heechul’s mouth, reducing Zhou Mi into two metres of pure shock: “I missed you, love.” There came a soft chuckle from the other shape and suddenly the hood of a dark cloak was pulled back, revealing a female face.

“I missed you too, hon.” the woman said, slipping her arms around Heechul’s middle and cuddling up against his chest. Even though that was weird to look at already, it was even weirder to see Heechul cradling her too, running long fingers over her back and pressing a kiss on her hair. Zhou Mi closed his eyes then, despite the order to not even blink, wanting very much to give them their privacy. He suddenly realised he could move everything else as well, so he opened his eyes again and turned away from the reuniting couple.

“Give the poor kid a break.” another voice suddenly spoke in a language Zhou Mi hadn’t thought he’d ever hear again in this country. “He doesn’t even know where to look now.” There were muffled sounds and then it seemed like two people ran into each other. When he turned around again, he was able to witness Heechul pretty much clinging onto another person, who was patting his back awkwardly. “Yeah, I missed you too, dude. Can you let go now?” the guy said with slight amusement in his voice. “We have company, you know.” To that, Heechul let go, taking a small step back, his hand almost automatically finding that of the woman.

There was a fourth shape standing behind the group of three people, Zhou Mi suddenly realised. Immediately a growl left him, although he didn’t plan for that to happen. And that’s when everyone seemed to really remember he was still in the room as well. Heechul turned around so fast he almost lost his balance while the other three turned to look at him. For a moment they stood there awkwardly, but then Heechul suddenly smiled, looking at the woman again.

“You’re my only weak point, love. I lost my concentration again.” he said, amusement obvious in his voice. To that, the woman smiled back at him, her fangs immediately obvious.

“Not me, hon, him.” she replied, pointing to the guy Heechul had clung to just before. Zhou Mi watched their exchange in annoyance, before growling. A sudden anger rose up in him and the next moment his hand hit the wall, a loud crack telling him he had probably damaged some of the bricks on the go. Not that he cared much in that particular moment.

“Tell me what the hell is going on, Heechul. You’ve been dragging me around for the past few days to find someone; I’m pretty sure we’ve found them now. What are you planning on doing with me?” he pretty much demanded to know. Right then, the unknown guy stepped forward, pulling back the hood of his cloak too. Zhou Mi gasped in recognition, his eyes going wide as he took a step back, deeper into the dark alley “Hangeng!” he breathed out in disbelief. “You’re supposed to be dead. I killed you.”

Sungmin froze in place, the voice so familiar to him even though he was sure he had never heard it before. What worried him more were the exact words, though, they seemed to resound somewhere deep inside of him. He didn’t get much time to think, however, because Henry took a step back, motioning him to walk back too.

“Oh please don’t already leave, my dear Henry, you’ve just gotten here.” the woman said with a smile in her voice and Henry stopped indeed. “I see you brought Sungmin too, huh?” She laughed softly. “Tell him to stay with us, he looks like he wants to run.” Sungmin frowned, why on earth would she think Henry was going to…

“Stay here, Sungmin, don’t move.” his friend calmly spoke, and as his muscles locked into place, Sungmin suddenly realised what was going on. This woman was… Well he had no idea about her name, but she was Henry’s sire, his previous sire. She was what he had been running from, yet unconsciously Henry had lead him straight to her. Or was it consciously? Did Henry know from the start? No, he couldn’t have, could he? Every possible scenario flew through his head, but in the end, he still had no idea which was the real one.

“So, my pets. Two of you have rejoined me now. That leaves me with two others still to come. It will be wonderful when all my pets have gathered. I’m sure your friends will come and get you later, but for now it’s just us.” She laughed then, seemingly amused at something they couldn’t see or understand. “It’s so nice to see you two again. I have to admit I was growing a little tired of my other pet’s face. After all, I have been in his company for years now. How long has it been anyway? Sungmin, darling, how long has it been since we last met?” Her eyes found him then, two bolls of liquid red fire seemingly wanting to pierce through him.

He felt a shiver run up his spine, and quickly directed his gaze to Henry’s back. Said vampire was still standing in the same spot, seemingly not moving or caring. But suddenly, Sungmin’s feet started to move, making him turn around and run. His body followed easily as he ran through the forest at an insane speed. The shocked ‘What are you doing? Tell him to stop!’ from the woman was lost behind him and the next moment he felt the invisible holds fall away. Henry had given up his siredom over him.

He didn’t stop running, however, didn’t stop until he was well out of the forest and on his way towards whatever city they had just come from. He was running out of a deep instinct to stay alive, because his senses were telling him that it was close to morning. The sun would rise soon and he had nothing to cover himself with if it did. Staying where he was would mean certain death.

He left miles and miles of distance behind him, seemingly not even feeling how much he was overexerting his body, but in the end his exhaustion got the best of him. He tripped over something, taking it down with him as he fell. He rolled over once, twice, and then came to a stop against something solid. The rock cracked when his body slammed into it, but it hurt like hell for him too, and he needed a few moments to recover.

When he finally crawled back onto his feet, the dark sky was already starting to become a shade of blue and immediately panic surged through him again. He broke into a run again almost immediately, going through miles and miles of fields, until he suddenly found himself on a street. He immediately stopped running, looking around, trying to find a place to hide. The sun was going to appear above the horizon any moment now and he was in desperate need of any kind of cover.

The next thing he knew, something crashed against him, pushing him over and making him roll down to the side of the road. Moments later everything went dark around him and someone – something? – pressed close to him. “Stay low.” a voice then mumbled behind him, the cold breath brushing his neck. “This is supposed to be for one person only, so don’t move. The sun will be up in a minute.” A shiver ran down his spine, but no matter who the vampire behind him was, he was sure he didn’t mind being in such a close proximity with him or her as he would mind stepping out into the sunlight.

“Hyukjae..” Siwon said slowly, reaching out a hand to him, but he evaded the touch, darting to a corner of the room and sinking down onto the ground. He clasped his hands over his ears and closed his eyes, resting his head on his knees. He would be fine with shutting out the world forever, but it didn’t take long for arms to wrap around him and pull him against a solid body. He sighed, wanted to push the other away yet for some reason didn’t.

In the distance he could hear heartbeats coming closer. Probably some nurses checking on other patients. Perhaps a few of them coming to check if Siwon was still alive. He huffed. Heartbeats. Perhaps that was a good name to use for the stupid nurses from now on. That way he didn’t need to know names, didn’t need to get involved with anyone. He wouldn’t make friends again in this place, because even the most trusted ones would betray you in the end. Heartbeats was a good name. All those filthy humans with their noisy heartb-

His head shot up, Siwon barely keeping them from colliding by quickly pulling away. They looked at each other for a moment, Siwon’s expression questioning, his own shocked. “She’s not a vampire.” he then suddenly said, blinking in surprise about the truth of his own words. “She can’t be. I heard her heartbeat. She’s not a vampire.” Siwon frowned, seemingly thinking back to the earlier events. Suddenly his eyes went wide in realisation.

“You’re right. But then how did she get burned by the sunlight?” the black haired vampire countered and that was where Hyukjae was at a loss too. He got up from the floor anyway, easily making his way over to the door.

“I need to find her.” he muttered, but Siwon didn’t even protest. On the contrary; he was already next to him, holding the door open.

“I’ll go with you. In case anyone asks questions, I can tell them it’s alright then.” he said calmly, a friendly smile evident on his face. Hyukjae didn’t even bother protesting and instead walked straight out into the hallway. He looked around for a moment, trying to pick up even a trace of Sang Mi’s scent, but it was nowhere to be found. He realised slightly belatedly that she had a different scent now, but couldn’t remember it anymore, so the knowledge was useless anyway. For a moment, he stared at the empty hallway, but then a different memory hit him.

“I think I might know where she went to.” he announced, setting off at the unusual vampire speed. I didn’t take long for him to find his way back to the small, empty room he had taken her to before. As they got closer, he did indeed hear a heartbeat, but it was a fast one, as if the owner was afraid or excited. He was pretty sure it was the first, which was why he sped up immediately, running to the door and throwing it open carelessly. “Sang Mi!” he called out, making the vampire in the middle of the room turn around.

Hyukjae didn’t even pay him any attention as he rushed past, moving to Sang Mi’s curled up form in a corner of the room. He immediately wrapped his arms around her trembling form, pulling her close and resting his head against her. He murmured some comforting words, which seemed to calm her down a little, because she was conscious enough to turn a little and wrap her arms around him, burying herself against his chest. He couldn’t really say he cared much, as all he was concerned about was her wellbeing.
