[FIC] Memories

Title: Memories
Characters: Super Junior
Rating: R
Chaptercount: 9/26
Summary: Fifteen people try to find the memories they forgot - or maybe they're just looking for each other.
A/N: A fic written on a hunch. One day I thought; "Super Junior. And vampires. This calls for a fic!" and well.. Here we are? Memories is one of the stories that I'm proud of, despite its sometimes messy storyline. It's also a story that won't be fully understood until you've read it completely. Things will be very confusing as you read, but will also get explained in future chapters. Be warned.

There was silence for a while as Hyukjae stared blankly ahead and Sang Mi stared at him. It seemed like no one would say a word, but then Hyukjae sighed. “If you tell anyone, you’re dead.” he calmly stated. She tried to imagine him killing someone, but that didn’t really work out. All she could come up with was his friendly smile and the way he shunned blood. His reaction to that image was to huff. “You forget that despite everything, I am still a vampire.” With those words, his fangs lengthened again and he growled at her, effectively making her move away from him. “I am not innocent. I HAVE killed people before. What you see can be misleading.”

Sang Mi suddenly became frighteningly aware of the fact that she was alone in a room with a vampire, without blood packs and with a locked door. She had even made others unable to listen in on their conversation by sealing off the door, so no one would hear her if she should cry for help. When Hyukjae suddenly took hold of her wrist, she felt herself tense up, ready to scream anyway even though no one would hear it.

“It’s time for you to go.” he said and she audibly gasped for breath at the strain in his voice. “I suggest you unlock the door now and leave. Tomorrow we’ll see each other again and it’ll be normal again between us.” He moved away then, fast, ready to cling onto his bed if it was needed. She got the hint, however, and quickly walked towards the door. It was when she pushed down the door handle that she remembered something important, so she turned around to look at him.

He was looking at her with eyes that were glowing green, a colour she had never seen any eyes have before – vampire or human alike. She got lost in them, forgetting why she had turned around and just staring at him. It was only when he moved to the other side of the bed, further away from her, that she realised she had started walking up to him. With a start, she quickly moved back towards the door again, eyes wide as she turned her face away from him.

“Be careful, Sang Mi, I’m a predator and we’re made to lure our prey in.” Hyukjae spoke up, making her look at him again even though she tried not to. Luckily he had turned his gaze to the ground so she could only catch a glimpse of the green. “It’s not safe for you to be around me so soon after I’ve fed on your blood. This mind reading will be gone after approximately four days, but the other stuff will be gone tomorrow. Just come back then.” Upon hearing those words, she suddenly remembered why she turned around in the first place.

“I won’t be here tomorrow. You need to be careful. They might send another nurse. Don’t..” she swallowed, glancing at the door shortly to make sure it was still closed and sealed. “Accept everything they give you, but don’t actually drink it or eat it. There’s no saying what the effects will be.” She sighed. “I have to go now before they get suspicious and come check up on us. I’ll see you in two days, Hyukjae. Take care of yourself. Don’t do anything stupid.”

The smile he sent her was stunning, especially because he looked up at her and she could see those green eyes in their full power once more. Moments later he looked away again and she took use of that moment to turn around, open the door and flee the room where her usually happy and easygoing Hyukjae had turned into something she didn’t recognise anymore.

Zhou Mi sighed when he looked at the protesting vampire. It had been a pain to get the stubborn guy and his useless pride to follow him into the motel, but now they even had to have a fight about sleeping? He repressed the urge to roll his eyes at the other as he spoke again. “Heechul-ssi, I don’t see what your problem is right now. You have a nice bed, a safe place to sleep, you fed, you’re still alive.. Can’t you just go to sleep now?”

Apparently that was not the best thing to say, because the snarky Nightwelp lunged at him again, dropping to the ground mid-air because of the order he had been given earlier that didn’t allow him to attack Zhou Mi. It worried the latter how the other got closer every time, however. He was going to have to come up with stronger orders concerning himself or he’d be Heechul’s food soon. He was pretty sure Heechul would ignore the bad taste of his blood if it meant being able to get at him.

“Get up, sit down on the bed and say what you have to say.” he ordered with another sigh. Heechul did as told, sitting down on the bed and looking at him with a displeased frown on his face.

“What my problem is? Isn’t that obvious?” he then replied, his eyes ablaze with his anger. Zhou Mi could swear there was also something else in there, but he couldn’t quite put a finger on it and he had other things to worry about. “Right when I got rid of my previous sire’s nagging, you come around and take over. What the hell do you want from me anyway? Did I kill your human pet? Are you bored? Do you have a thing for me? If you do, I’m sorry but I’m not gay. I know plenty of things for you to do that do not involve annoying me, so just go.” If the words did not stun him already, then Heechul’s actions did, as the vampire reached out a hand and got up. “Hand me your phone.”

“What?” he stammered, too taken aback by everything happening to have a more decent reply ready. Heechul rolled his eyes at him.
“Your phone. Quickly. Do I look like I have all day?” The hand wanting his phone became more insistent, reaching out towards his left pocket where he had indeed put the phone away.

“What are you doing? Don’t touch me!” he protested, but Heechul closed in on him anyway, slipping two fingers into his pocket and taking out the broken phone. He wanted to say something more, but the suddenly overly confident vampire cut him off before he could.
“I did not touch you, I touched your pants. Now shush and let me do my job. You have a lot to learn still, so leave the lead to your elder.” he calmly stated, pressing several buttons and then suddenly holding the phone next to his ear.

“What are you doing? You broke that phone yourself, don’t you remember!” Zhou Mi called out, not getting a single thing of what the other was doing, but Heechul motioned him to shut up again, right as a female voice spoke up from the phone. The smile that spread over Heechul’s face upon hearing the voice was so gentle it was hard to imagine him feeding off humans like the ruthless vampire he was.

“Long time no hear, love.” he then said, an amused tone to his voice. “I assume you sent this kid to me? … Figures.” His smile became dangerous then, which made Zhou Mi move away from him a little. “I guess it’s time then, huh? Couldn’t you have sent a more capable one?” There was a moment in which the person on the other side replied, before Heechul snorted. “Very capable? He doesn’t even know how to keep his subordinate in check. … Well, you’re right, no one can keep me in check. Anyway, what’s the big plan? Bring him over? Okay, I’ll get a new phone and call you with that one soon. Bye.”

With that, Heechul hung up and passed the phone to him again. He caught it just in time, looking from the phone to the vampire and back, utterly lost. For a moment Heechul eyed him, but then he turned around to open the curtains and the window, letting the sun enter the room. Zhou Mi wanted to jump forward and pull him out of the light that would most likely kill him, but strangely Heechul remained unaffected, turning his head to look at him once more.

“Well then..” he even said. “Let’s go to this facility of yours. It’s nice out now.”

For the second time that day, he woke up to the constant beating of a heart. There was a strange sense of déjà-vu in the first moments after waking up, but then he remembered everything again. Everything...and so much more.

He remembered a life before the facility, before being a vampire even. He remembered his parents and singing and dancing. He even remembered dying. Then there were a few years filled with the life of a vampire before he stumbled upon the facility and Misun. He remembered the plans, the noble ideas, and how they all turned bitter. He remembered a new race, creating Han Li Yin…

With a start, he shot up, opening his eyes and searching for her face. She was looking at him with an apologetic smile, as if she knew exactly what he was going through and how bad his headache was from all the thinking he had done. He felt something strangely familiar dwelling at the edge of his memory, wanting him to acknowledge it but couldn’t grasp it. He kept looking at the venger, and the next moment she was squished against his chest in a tight hug.

“We did it.” he whispered. “You did it! The plan worked. It actually worked.” She smiled, carefully wrapping her arms around his middle too and closing her eyes for a little while.

“It only worked because you realised the strength of our bond right in time, Hangeng-ssi.” she replied, feeling herself relax now that she finally had an ally again in the facility. “If you had come up with the plan mere moments later, it would’ve been too late, because they came in right after.” She sighed in contentment having the stress of the past few weeks leave her.

“Oh please.. Call me gege and speak Chinese, that’s what we both know best anyway.” he protested and she laughed softly.

“Yes father.” she joked to which he immediately pushed her away from him with a disgusted sound. She couldn’t help laughing again, because it all felt so familiar and things finally seemed to be right again. “Gege, what do you remember from human life?” she questioned as she sat up, getting back on track, because there was still too much to do.

“My mother used to have a dumpling shop but she quit recently because she became too old to keep working. I was a singer once in a band with several people who all..” He suddenly stopped talking, lifting his head to look at her. “They were all changed?” he then asked in a whisper, eyes wide with disbelief. The only thing she could do was nod.

“We need to start moving, gege. Because of the commotion you created yesterday two vampires escaped. They were only days away from their ritual to become Daywalkers, so Jack is furious. We have a new recruit who’s a telekinetic vampire and whose guardian is planning to help him get out of here, even though she’s convinced he could escape on his own just as easily. There’s also a group of about three chasers who are after the two escaped Daywelps, amongst them your old friend Ryeowook and two of the recently created crew. They’ve sent out Zhou Mi too, but it appears he’s had some trouble trying to catch the one he’s after.” she summed up the recent events, smiling slightly at the last sentence.

“What?” Hangeng piped up, disbelief on his face. “They sent someone to get Heechul even after agreeing with him they’d let him go?” He growled, the red slowly seeping into his eyes, but she merely put a hand on his shoulder.

“Don’t worry, gege, you know Heechul. He’ll be fine, even if Zhou Mi was twice as good as he is, he can’t outsmart Heechul. Heechul gege was trained to be the best no matter how many years pass, you know that. We have no time to worry about him anyway. Once you’re able to stand, I’m taking you out and we’ll go. I’ve already discussed this with Misun. She thinks I’m going to teach you the hunting and chasing techniques again, so we won’t get followed for a while, until they realise we’re actually gone.”

☆.:**´¨`**:.☆

There was a moment long in which he felt stupid standing there with his fangs buried in someone else’s wrist, but then the blood reached his mouth and he staggered back in a matter of moments, disgust written all over his face. The blood tasted awful, sending surges of disgust through him so powerful he wanted to vomit. Sungmin was looking at him with a smile, however, the tension completely gone from his stance.

“I’m sorry.” he said, sounding truly apologetic. “Vampires are not supposed to drink the blood from each other’s veins, so it is not of a good taste to other vampires.” Henry snorted, wiping his mouth with the same disgusted expression still avid on his face.

“Bloody hell.” he cursed, frowning deeply. The other couldn’t hide a grin at that. “That’s just disgusting. I’d rather die than drink that.”

“We all feel the same,” Sungmin replied, making him huff. “It actually is the whole purpose of the taste, of course. If vampires would start feeding off of each other there would be even more useless fights amongst ourselves. It’s already hard enough dealing with the vampire hunters.” The confused look on Henry’s face said more than words could’ve said and Sungmin smiled because of it. “There’s humans who know about our existence and are trying to kill us. We call them vampire hunters. They have very effective ways to kill us.”

“Perhaps I should search for them then.” the answer came, Henry’s voice nothing but a mumble, as if he was talking more to himself than anything. The next moment his head snapped up and his intimidating blood red eyes bore into Sungmin’s. “Who called you? What did I just save you from?” There was a slight twitch of the other’s hand when he said that, as if the older vampire was tempted to run away. “I think I have the right to know, having helped you with it.” he therefore continued, successfully cornering the other.

Sungmin let out a sigh, before replying. “My sire. The one who created me. She’s been calling me for a few weeks now. I used to live in Tokyo, but ever since she called I just couldn’t stay in one place. I’ve been wandering around trying to find other vampires, but I certainly didn’t expect to run into one here.” There was a certain amusement in his voice, as if he found the thought laughable, but then he seemed to remember something and his expression turned darker.

“What’s wrong?” Henry quickly asked, not liking the way the aura around them had grown colder.

“I should go now. There’s no way she’s going to let me live this down if she ever finds me. Honestly, you better get out of here for a while too. There’s a big chance she’ll come to find me or send someone else after me, and when she passes here you’re dead.” the other immediately clarified the sudden change, cocking his head to the side a little, before smiling shortly. “I suggest you go find yourself a new forest or a mountain to live if you don’t want to feed off of humans.”

There was a short moment in which they looked at each other, dark ruby eyes staring into blood red eyes, but then an amused smile pulled up the corners of Henry’s mouth and he patted Sungmin’s cheek. “I’m going with you and you’re going to show me the world without refusing.” he said, his smile widening so that his fangs became visible. Sungmin cursed in his mind, realising the other’s words now had power over him.
