[FIC] Memories

Title: Memories
Characters: Super Junior
Rating: R
Chaptercount: 16/26
Summary: Fifteen people try to find the memories they forgot - or maybe they're just looking for each other.
A/N: A fic written on a hunch. One day I thought; "Super Junior. And vampires. This calls for a fic!" and well.. Here we are? Memories is one of the stories that I'm proud of, despite its sometimes messy storyline. It's also a story that won't be fully understood until you've read it completely. Things will be very confusing as you read, but will also get explained in future chapters. Be warned.

“What do you mean?” Youngwoon countered. “And what happened while I was out of the room before? What exactly is going on, really? Maybe you should just start from the beginning.” He was confused, but even though he would usually get frustrated, this time he didn’t. Jongwoon turned to look at him then, smiling softly. “There’s still some room next to Kyuhyun, maybe you should sit down while we talk.” the reply then came and he found himself walking up to the bed already without consciously thinking about it. Once he sat down, he felt a sudden tiredness take over him and it didn’t take long for him to fall back asleep next to the maknae.

Jongwoon watched his friend lie down and fall asleep with a sigh. Things were not going to go smoothly from now on, that was a given. He needed time to think things over. Time he’d only get by keeping his friends currently asleep. They needed it anyway. God knows he needed it too, but someone would have to stay awake to look over them. For a moment he focused on the small ties connecting him to his friends, making sure they would all be under for a while longer. He then turned back to the window and put a hand against the cool glass, sighing slightly.

“Hey dear..” he said then, looking up at the night sky. “It’s been a long time since we last saw each other, hasn’t it?” There was a smile on his face, but it was accompanied by a hint of sadness. “I’ve been trying to do things I know you would approve of, but it is hard. I miss you, really. Have you seen Iseul recently? She’s grown up to be a beautiful young woman, hasn’t she? I hope she’s doing fine with your parents. I hope everyone is doing fine. You’re watching over us, aren’t you? I hope you are. I hope you’re proud of me. I hope you still love me. I don’t want to do all this, but I have to. And I wish I could have you by my side, but I’m afraid I can’t. I love you, dear. One day we will meet again, I’m sure.”

He sighed again, staring outside a moment longer before turning away. It was time to plan out their next moves and he couldn’t stand by to remember old times, good times. He needed to focus on the here and now, needed to make up a plan that did not include losing any of his friends again. It didn’t take him long to figure out what their next move was supposed to be; find more of their members. What he did need to think about was how they would do that and where those other members would be. Suddenly his eyes fell on something below and the next moment recognition swamped through him.

It didn’t take him long to break the ties then, rudely waking the other four up from their sleep. Before any of them could ask questions or complain, he was at the door already. “We need to go. Now.” he said. “Please don’t ask questions, there is no time to waste. This is important.” Apparently he sounded sincere enough, because the next moment they were all right behind him, ready to follow wherever he went. And so he set off, leaving the hotel room behind him without looking back.

“Mi- What?” Zhou Mi stammered, looking at Hangeng intently. There was no sign that the other was lying. “How is that possible? Misun has always been the leader. She’s the founder, she’s the brain behind the Daywalkers. How is it possible that she lost her leadership? How could you let that happen?” he immediately burst out then. Hangeng gave him another one of those smiles that could mean anything and everything, before turning away slightly.

“There’s not much I could do while being chased around by you and then locked in a patient’s room.” he then deadpanned, making Zhou Mi feel slightly taken aback for a moment. He couldn’t help grinning sheepishly, but before he could reply to the rather teasing comment, the fourth guy suddenly put a hand on Hangeng’s arm, leaning in and mumbling something to him. At that, Hangeng started to smile, turning away from Zhou Mi completely. “It seems like we have company, Heechul.” he then said. “You’re going to love this.” There was an amused smile tugging up the corners of his mouth, giving him a much more relaxed appearance.

Before anyone could say or do anything more, the alley suddenly crowded even more and the next moment every single one of them was suddenly covered in vampire – Li Yin excluded. Heechul had a dark brown haired young man clinging to him, excited squeals and calls of ‘hyung’ being muffled by the elder’s shirt which the man had pressed his face into. Hangeng had an excited small one holding his hands, letting out a confusing mix of Chinese and Korean. The stranger was being overwhelmed by someone who seemed very capable of taking them all down in one blow and Zhou Mi himself was covered in one lanky, curly haired vampire cuddle.

The only ones seeming undisturbed by everything were Li Yin and a peculiar looking stranger still standing a little away from them. “Guys…” said stranger’s calm voice filled the air not that long after. “Did it even occur to you that maybe they have not a single clue who you are?” There was some sort of amusement in his voice, but also something more that Zhou Mi couldn’t quite pinpoint. “Yes.” he agreed with the words anyway. “Like me. I have no idea who you are. Could you please just let g-” he started, but in the middle of his sentence, the one hanging around him suddenly started poking his face and pulling his hair.

“You’re real.” the excited guy then said, in such adorably perfect Chinese that he almost wanted to coo over it. Until he remembered the situation he was in. The next thing he knew, he was overwhelmed by a stream of excited and happy Chinese that made him almost want to hug the other back. It was then that he realised something was absolutely wrong with the whole situation and his eyes found Heechul and Hangeng. The two of them were completely absorbed in their interactions with the two that had assaulted them before, seemingly not awkward at all. A little further away, the stranger was having a low conversation with the intimidating man.

“Jongwoon..” Li Yin then spoke, a smile lighting up her face a little. “How nice to see you. My name is Li Yin. It seems you have managed to gather quite a few of your friends.” She bowed slightly then. “You probably don’t know me, but I am a friend of Hangeng and Heechul.” Her smile was almost radiant and upon hearing her words, the guy named Jongwoon stepped a little closer as well.

“You didn’t do too bad of a job yourself.” he then said, smiling lightly. “It is nice to meet you, Li Yin.” They shook hands shortly, as if this wasn’t the weirdest meeting ever. If it wasn’t for the guy still clinging to him, Zhou Mi would’ve taken off long time ago. “It seems Zhou Mi is not aware of his past, but he is tied closely to Heechul hyung. Have you not discovered yet how to make him regain his memories?” At that, everyone seemed to freeze and turn to look at him, the guy clinging to Zhou Mi included. “Kyuhyun, let go of him. Can’t you see he feels uncomfortable?” Jongwoon then ordered with a soft smile and Zhou Mi would’ve dropped down on his knees to thank him if it wasn’t for the bit of pride he had left.

“I… How do you know Henry?” Sungmin suddenly questioned, realising that it was rather strange for a famous model to know a guy who had been hiding in a forest for over a decade. It was then that he realised the other seemed to know him as well – which was even stranger. “And how do you know me?” he then added, frowning. The other shrugged, cocking his head to the side a little.

“You know me too, don’t you?” he then said, to which Sungmin had to hold back a snort. “Yes, well, you’re a famous model. You’re on magazine covers every other day. It would be a surprise if I didn’t know you. Henry or I, on the other hand, have never been as much as in the papers for our whole lives. I don’t think anyone did a story on ‘the pale guy living in the bushes’ or ‘the pale guy waiting tables in Japan.’”

Apparently he had just said something funny, because the other started laughing. “Correction.” the model then said, still sounding amused. “You have not been on the cover of a magazine ever since you remember.” Sungmin frowned then. It was one thing to be talking to Kim Kibum, probably one of the most famous models in South Korea. It was another thing to find out that the guy was a vampire as well. But having that famous vampire model talking like he knew stuff about Sungmin that Sungmin himself didn’t even know about, now that was creepy.

“What do you mean by that?” he therefore asked, completely confused by the words. “Was there ever more to my life than I can remember?” Kibum smiled at that, reaching out a hand to him that seemed inviting and threatening at the same time. He looked at it for a moment, his eyes going from the slender fingers up to the wrist, the arm and then the other’s face. In the end he turned away and slipped through the door, into the shadowy hallway. “I need to help Henry out.”

“And I’m going to help you with that. You just need to trust me for a minute. Let me repeat something so that it gets through to your head; there’s nothing you can do as long as the sun is still up.” Kibum stressed, the words resounding in Sungmin’s mind before they finally found response and he realised the model was right. As long as the sun was shining, they had nowhere to go. He muttered something of a curse, before sighing and resigning to his situation. Right then, a slightly familiar song started to play and Kibum quickly slipped a phone out of his pocket, checking the caller ID before bringing it to his ear with a frown.

“Hello?” he spoke calmly, a slight insecurity seeming to seep into his voice as he turned away from Sungmin a little. Moments later his face cleared however, and he muttered something in surprise before nodding shortly. “Yes, you did get the right number. I take it that moment you were talking about before has arrived now?” There was a slight smile on his face as he ran his fingers over the rough paint of the wall next to him. Something seemed to dance in his eyes that went way beyond anything Sungmin had ever seen on the model’s face.

He was a great model for sure. He knew the right poses, the right expressions. He knew how to smile and how to look good. He knew how to portray every emotion in the book, but this.. It felt a little like looking at a withered flower suddenly returning to full bloom. Kibum looked like he had found a home. Sungmin was too far away to hear what the other said, but when Kibum answered, the amusement and surprise in his voice were crystal clear.

“Really? Well I’m with a Lee Sungmin right now and I actually wanted to ask you for your help to try and save his friend, Henry Lau. We’re hiding from the sun right now because he’s not wearing anything to cover up with. Do you think you could find us, bring us some clothes?” There was another short silence and then; “Fine, okay, you’ll be here in half an hour?”

For a moment everything seemed to freeze, time seemed to stop for an instant, only to then continue at twice the speed. Sang Mi and Hyukjae slipped to the ground and the only thing keeping the latter from falling on his butt were his trained reflexes. Sang Mi was less lucky, letting out a pained groan when she smacked onto the ground. The woman seemed unaffected by what had happened, softly patting Siwon’s back as she let him cry out his remorse. She looked very gracious, her dark hair falling over her shoulders in shiny waves, emanating so much care it was as if she were an angel.

But her heartbeat told a different tale, and Hyukjae searched for her face in his memories of Sang Mi’s thoughts. He tried to link it to the things he remembered from stories other patients and nurses had told him to create a complete image of the woman. Right as he wanted to speak, she looked up at him and he fell silent. She was older than she had been in Sang Mi’s memories, somewhere in her early forties probably. It obviously had been a while already since the girl had actually seen the woman. Or maybe he could see the lines on her face better than a normal human could.

She looked away before he could get deeper into his thoughts about her looks, turning to Siwon and gently pushing him away from her a little. “Siwon-ah, my dear, are you alright?” she questioned softly, making said vampire look up at her with sad eyes. There were no tears, but it was obvious there would have been plenty if Siwon were still human. “Don’t put so much blame onto yourself for what you have done over the years. You did what was the right thing to do and sometimes what you were ordered to do. The one you just banished was going to do bad things and it’s better like this.”

Siwon was slightly trembling, but he nodded anyway, making the woman smile. She stroked through his hair once more and then stood up, urging him along with her. “I’m sorry for freaking out.” Siwon then said, his voice sounding slightly shaken. All he got in return was a friendly smile and a soft ‘Don’t worry about it, dear.’ After that the woman walked up to Sang Mi, who had stood up from the ground by then. The nurse was obviously scared, unconsciously edging more towards the corner of the room, but the woman gently yet firmly took hold of her hand to stop her. She lifted it up to her face to look at it for a moment and then smiled a sad smile.

“I’m sorry that you had to go through this, Sang Mi.” she spoke, that deep care still in her voice. “I was supposed to come get you a week ago, but then you were sent out on a mission and I haven’t had the time to get in touch with you since.” Her smile was warm, giving off a feeling of trust and safety. “Don’t worry; you’re still a human, you haven’t turned into a vampire.” Hyukjae could almost feel the relief that radiated from Sang Mi, but before he could question about it, movement in the corner of his eye made him turn to Siwon, right in time to basically be swallowed in a hug.

It was awkward yet fine at the same time as he patted the other’s back and gently hugged him back. There were murmured words of encouragement and a soft ‘thanks for not doing whatever you were about to do there’ somewhere in between it all as well. At least it seemed to help, because when Siwon let go, he was smiling again and something about that smile made him smile back. They turned to look at the two women then, who apparently had been looking at them. Sang Mi in wonder, the woman with a surprisingly sincere smile on her face. For a moment Hyukjae looked at the woman and she looked back at him.

“So you’re the one they call Misun.” he then stated in a low voice.
