[FIC] Memories

Title: Memories
Characters: Super Junior
Rating: R
Chaptercount: 5/26
Summary: Fifteen people try to find the memories they forgot - or maybe they're just looking for each other.
A/N: A fic written on a hunch. One day I thought; "Super Junior. And vampires. This calls for a fic!" and well.. Here we are? Memories is one of the stories that I'm proud of, despite its sometimes messy storyline. It's also a story that won't be fully understood until you've read it completely. Things will be very confusing as you read, but will also get explained in future chapters. Be warned.

Kyuhyun sighed as he tugged Jongwoon along with him. They had to find a place where they could spend the day, because there was no way in the world that he would want to be outside the moment the sun rose. He looked around but didn’t really come up with anything, so he turned to Jongwoon. The latter seemed quite preoccupied about something so he decided to wait a bit. When after a few minutes still nothing changed, he finally spoke.

“We need a place to spend the day.” he told the other, smiling sourly. Jongwoon looked up in surprise, blinked a few times and then sighed.

“You’re right. Let’s go to my house.” he replied, getting up and looking around to verify where he was. After a few seconds he started walking, and Kyuhyun followed, surprised to find out the other vampire actually owned a house. They didn’t travel far when Jongwoon popped some keys out of his pocket and opened the door to some random house in the street they were in.

They walked into the completely darkened house, where Jongwoon turned on a light the moment the door closed behind them. They took off their shoes, and walked further into the house, entering the living room. They both took place on the empty couches that were close to the only furniture the house held and lapsed into another silence. As Kyuhyun looked around, Jongwoon seemed to get lost in the trail of his thoughts.

A long time passed, before Jongwoon suddenly sighed and looked up at Kyuhyun. It was not clear if the sun had already risen or not, but judging from the way the younger’s eyes were halfway closed, it probably had. He eyed the other for a while, before shaking his head as if to clear it from the many things floating around in it. It was only after another amount of time that he finally spoke again, however.

“Okay, so what now?” he wondered. “Should we try and find the others?”
Kyuhyun merely shrugged, slowly opening his eyes again and focusing his gaze on the elder. “Maybe one of them knows what has happened.” he retorted, before smirking rather evilly. “And if they don’t, we can simply bite them so that at least they are forever on our side. Let them all know of their past.”

“That’s a good idea.” the eldest mumbled, closing his eyes for a moment, before sending a questioning look at the other. “Will you go with me?”

“No I won’t.” Kyuhyun replied sarcastically. “That’s why I’ve been talking using the we-form.” He closed his eyes again. “Let’s sleep first.” Jongwoon sighed, but took the younger vampire’s advice, closing his eyes as well and soon drifting off into the comatose sleep that easily came to them when the sun had risen.

By the time they had run about an hour, they were both far gone from the place they had only recently escaped. No one was tailing them and it seemed that what Hyukjae had told them about vampires walking in and out daily was the normal course of events. They stopped, their breathing heavy and their bodies feeling tired, something that had never happened in the past, as far as they could remember. As they sunk down on the ground, the both of them trying to even out their breathing again, they finally turned to look at each other. For a moment they just stared, but then their grins started to widen until they boomed with laughter. Donghae was the first to regain himself, still grinning widely, but managing to speak.

“We made it.” he told the other, almost unable to believe it himself. “We’re out.” He laughed again, just to hear the sound spread out in the open air and multiply itself in the air. Youngwoon was grinning widely as well, nodding in response to Donghae’s words.

“Can you believe it?” he replied, expression filled with happiness. “I remember nothing from before I got stuck in that shithole and I don’t even know how long I’ve been there, but it sure as hell feels good to be out of there.” He loosened his shoulders and stretched his arms. “It’s almost unbelievable that we’re out. I think I’ll need some getting used to the idea of being free.”

“Don’t take too long. The moment they realise we’re gone, there’ll be daywalkers on our trails for sure. I don’t think they’ll fancy us telling other vampires about this prison.” the younger responded, growling slightly. “We’d better not waste too much time sitting here. Where are you going to go?” Youngwoon was silent for a bit, contemplating the question and then trying to come up with a good answer.

“Honestly..” he finally spoke. “..I have no idea where we are. I only vaguely remember stuff; getting burnt by the sun, voices, chaos, but there’s no recollection of places in my head. All I can tell you about are the few places in that prison that I have been to throughout my time there. Do you still remember anything?” He eyed the pensive Donghae questioningly.

“No I don’t.. But that makes sense, right? Hyukjae said they erased our memories. We’ll just have to choose a direction each and go that way.” the latter finally said, letting his fingers run through the grass they were sitting on.

“Then I will go South. It’s warmer there.” Youngwoon immediately stated agreeing with his companion’s theory.

“Hey, I wanted to go that way too!” Donghae complained with a pout, making Youngwoon chuckle.

“Then why don’t you do so? No one said we couldn’t go in the same direction.”

“But if we split up, they will have to do the same and it will be harder to track one lonely traveller than two of them.” Donghae protested. His reasoning was dismissed by a wave of Youngwoon’s arm.

“If we travel together, we’ll be stronger and more able to fight them off if ever they should catch up. And still, there’s plenty of places for us to go. We’re not leaving any trail behind, so how would they find us? You’re too much of a worrywart, Bong Sae.”

“My name is Donghae.”

“Well, at least I got the syllables right, that’s an achievement already.” Youngwoon grinned. “I think I’m older than you anyway, so I’ll just call you dongsaeng. It’s not that different from Donghae. You can call me hyung, saves us the trouble of remembering names and if ever anyone asks me about your name, I won’t be able to betray you.” A short silence settled after his words, before Donghae spoke again.

“Well then, hyung..” he started and they both took a moment to marvel at the fact that the word resounded in their heads, as if getting response from somewhere deep inside them. “What are we still waiting for?” With that, they both got up and set off towards the South, the place the sun had passed already.

Hangeng followed the other vampire, wary because it was never good to trust someone too much, but slightly eager as well because he was hungry and they had said it was blood they’d get him. As they passed through the hallway, he could witness the obvious power his companion seemed to have, because the moment anyone saw the tall one walking up to them, they made sure to get the heck out of his way. There was only one person that did not move aside and as they passed her, she demanded an explanation from his companion, her eyes wandering over Hangeng’s body as she did so. He glared back intensely, but didn’t speak, pretending that Chinese was the only language he understood.

After telling the woman about his tantrum, Siwon wanted to continue with the following events, but the woman cut him off by raising her hand. “I trust you to take care of him as needed, Siwon.” she muttered in fierce Korean that was slightly accented. “Don’t make me regret that trust.” With those words she flashed a sharp-teethed smile at both Siwon and him, before dashing off through the hallway. At that sudden revelation, Hangeng felt the need to speak.

“She’s a vampire.” he stated in Chinese, frowning because he was sure he had heard a heartbeat coming from her. The two separate pieces of information didn’t fit together.

“No, she’s a venger.” Siwon corrected him politely. “The only one of her kind. You should treat her with the utmost respect because she can take you down in a millisecond.” Hangeng frowned more at that, but before he could ask what the hell a venger was, two arms were wrapped around his neck and he felt a clear beating of a heart against his back.

“You better listen to them carefully, new guy because you might just get surprised.” a voice mumbled next to his ear in clear, unaccented Chinese. By the time his reflexes made him turn to her, she was already long gone again, leaving no trail of her presence behind. He did notice Ryeowook walking up to them, stopping at Siwon’s side.

“Like I told you, you better treat her with respect. She won’t tolerate such a glare a second time.” the tall vampire said, before Hangeng could question anything.

“What IS she?” he exclaimed in wonder, but they ushered him to start walking again before replying.

“She’s a venger. A crossbreed between human and vampire. Her enhanced senses and thick skin make her no longer a true human, but because her heart still beats. She does not need to drink blood to survive, because her own blood still runs through her veins and the constant fresh supply makes her twice as fast and strong as other vampires.” Siwon explained. There were questions coming up in Hangeng’s head about things he didn’t really want to think about - HOW she was created for example - but he didn’t ask them. Instead he glanced back at the already long empty hallway.

“What’s her name?” he wondered, making a chuckle erupt from his two companions.

“No one knows. She gives a different name every time she’s asked for it, but we all call her mistress or boss.” Ryeowook mixed into the conversation for the first time, showing that his Chinese skills weren’t too low-levelled either. Hangeng found himself pondering about the nameless woman some more, until Siwon woke him from his pondering by announcing that they had arrived.

Hyukjae was dumbfounded for a moment, not sure what to reply to her question exactly, but in the end he decided to be truthful, because it wouldn’t do lying to her when he had been complaining for such a long time that she never told him the truth either. He huffed for a moment and eyed her in wonder. “How did you know?” he then demanded, making her smile amusedly. She patted his upper arm and took a step back – vampires were a moody kind after all.

“I might not have your enhanced senses, but I’m not stupid either.” She then told him softly. “I followed you from the moment you left your room. I always follow you, it’s my job. I was curious to see what you were going to do with them so I didn’t interfere, but I came to get you before you could really do some stupid things – like walking outside into the sun possibly.” Her eyes were fixed on his expression, which went from shocked to confused to angry and finally settled on confused again. She let out a relieved sigh when his stance relaxed. At least he wasn’t going to attack her…for now.

“Why did you let them go? Why didn’t you stop them? Ever since I got here you have been preaching the rules of this facility to me like they are religious laws. Why would you go against everything you taught me?” he asked, his hand lashing out and strong fingers curling around her wrist, pulling her along with him – probably because he had sensed something her ears couldn’t hear yet. She let herself be pulled into a little, empty room and watched how he locked the door before turning back to her. “Why?” he repeated rather fiercely.

She sighed, trying to free her hand from his grip – something that was sure to fail before she even tried. She sighed when his fingers tightened even more around her wrist and frowned slightly. He merely stared back, no emotion whatsoever on his face. They stayed like that for a while, until his grip became too tight and she winced. “Hyukjae, you’re hurting me.” she mumbled, making him let go of her immediately, his gaze softening as he glanced at her reddened wrist.

“I’m sorry.” he mumbled as she rubbed her wrist to get the blood to run again. She noticed his eyes slightly darkening and quickly took a step back. He did not need much blood to keep controlled, even without the treatment they planned to give him in the facility, but she still had to stay cautious, because a vampire could always lose his hold on himself, in any given time or place.

“I let them go because..” she started, successfully drawing his attention away from her vulnerable wrist. “..as much as I support the whole idea behind this organisation, I don’t quite like the fact that we keep people in the dark about everything. I also don’t like the fact that we keep them hostage on top of that, no matter what the reasons. ‘Projects’ Kim Youngwoon and Lee Donghae deserved their freedom.” She smiled lightly. “Besides, why do you think I was appointed to you? I talk too much and they know it, so since you want to know a lot.. Well, here we are.”

He took some time to process that information, his eyes scanning her face, but finding only truth. For a while he heard nothing but her heartbeat, her blood pulsing through her veins and her calm breathing, until he snapped out of it, calmly reaching out a hand to her with the palm opened upwards. She didn’t hesitate as s he put her hand in his, stepping closer to him again, something that irked him. “Are you not afraid?” he asked slightly astonished, but she merely smiled.

“I’ve had much fiercer patients.” she told him. “You’re the sweetest one so far.” Her smile became nostalgic. “I’ve been here since young and have always been intrigued by your kind, ever since I found out about your existence.” She chuckled. “But you don’t want to know that. I’ll tell you about this place instead. Let’s go back to your room first, we need the privacy.” With those words, she tightened her grip on his hand and pulled him out into the hallway again.
