Fic Challenge - 050; Lost [12/100]

Title: I will find you there
Characters: Kyuhyun, Heechul
Rating: PG-13
Wordcount: 1.461
Summary: Between holding on and letting go, there's one line that holds him.
A/N: There was once a day I would have laughed at anyone telling me I would write a whole story about no other than Kyuhyun, but then there was this plotbunny and it wouldn't leave me and now.. Well let's just say I'm not going to write another one if I can help it. Because every time I look at that number 50 and see "Lost - Heechul/Kyuhyun" all I can think of is this story, I added it as a story into my fic challenge, even though it originally wasn't when I wrote it. Bite me. x]

Kyuhyun runs as fast as his legs can carry him, moving away from the horrifying scene at a high speed. He doesn’t know why he’s running so fast, as he hasn’t done anything wrong, but the sound of footsteps behind him still follows him now, even though he has already crossed several streets and turned left or right at several corners, and it is scaring the shit out of him. Somewhere far behind him, he can hear the sound of a gunshot, making him think the worst. His legs feel numb, his breathing rags through his battered body and his face is covered in sweat and tears, but he doesn’t care about it. With all the strength he can muster, he breaks into one final sprint and ends with a giant leap that brings him flying over the railing of the bridge.

There is a moment of sweet nothingness in which he falls, falls and falls, until his body collides with the water. All air is punched out of him by the sickening blow and he feels a jolt of pain rush through his whole body, making him unable to lift his arms to swim back up to the surface. After a few moments, he can already feel his body craving for a breath of air and his mind is starting to send emergency signals to his limbs to start working again. Yet nothing responds. Black spots start dancing in front of his eyes as his vision starts failing him, but he does not give up the inner struggle against his unwilling limbs. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he hears the words his hyung spoke to him.

“Get out of here.” Heechul had said, pointing a finger over his shoulder to show which direction he wanted Kyuhyun to flee in. “Run until your legs feel like they’re on fire and then run some more. Make sure no one knows where you went to. Just run and keep running. When you’re certain you have left everyone behind, find some place safe to hide. I will find you there.”

There had been a determination in his hyung’s voice that showed he wasn’t going to give up just like that. The short but meaningful look Heechul had shot his way had been enough to make him bolt away immediately, without asking further questions, leaving behind his two hyungs and the bunch of anti-fans who carried all kinds of different weapons. Some had simple sticks, other brought baseball bats and some even seemed to have brought knives. He had found himself with no other options left but to run.

As his body is slowly sinking, being dragged down by the heavy clothes, he finds himself wanting to gasp for air, but he knows that he will only gulp in water when he does. The lack of oxygen is making him feel lightheaded and powerless, but he fights off the deadly urge with all the willpower he has left. Suddenly his mind is engulfed in a sudden bright moment despite the darkness that is creeping closer from the corners of his mind and he finds himself vividly remembering the need in his hyung’s words..

‘Find some place safe to hide. I will find you there.’

It’s right then and there that Kyuhyun realises there will be nothing for Heechul to find when he drowns in a bloody river because of his own stupidity. Yet his body refuses to listen when he wills it to move and it seems like there is no way he’s going to get out of it. He sees the faces of the people he loves most as his feet hit the ground and his mouth opens to let in the first gulp of water, the start of his few final moments.

As the water fills his lungs, however, he somehow manages to break out of the numbness and his body suddenly responds to his mind again. He pushes himself off on the ground with his feet and claws his way through the water for the love of his life, until his head breaks through the surface and the cool night air brushes his face.

He gasps for air, coughing up water as he does so, and struggles to keep his head above the surface. Yet his clothes are a major ballast and are dragging him down. Without giving it a second thought, he grabs his belt and loosens it, quickly unbuttoning his pants and struggling to get out of them. Once he has gotten rid of the dead weight, he willingly takes off his jacket as well, leaving it to float away on the tide of the river. He then starts to maul his arms through the water, letting his tired and numb legs rest as he claws himself a way to the shore.

Battered, broken and exhausted, he finally manages to drag his nearly lifeless body on the rocks below the bridge and rolls onto his back, his breathing uneven and faltering now and then. He feels his heart beat against his chest at an outrageous speed, as if it wants to escape his body. With a sigh, he closes his eyes, letting his body come to rest. The moment the adrenaline leaves him, however, his senses kick in again and he feels goose bumps starting to form all over his body as the freezing cold of the night is being registered by his brain. In a futile attempt to keep warm, he rolls up into a tiny ball, warming his fingers at his armpits.

“Hyung..” he mumbles with chattering teeth, in a haze of cold, wet and lonely. “You promised you would find me here.” There is a sense of desperation in his voice as his subconscious is already slowly accepting a certain one of his fears. What if the gunshot he had heard had been one coming from a gun that was pointed at one of his hyungs? What if there is no more Heechul to come and find him? The still conscious part of his brain refuses to accept that thought, however, and he sinks back into a world of shivers, shadows and vivid nightmares.

As time passes, the coldness seems to disappear, leaving him with a numb feeling that is the first stage of freezing. He wants to move, but finds himself unable to, the strength having completely left his body. He wants to call out for help, but his vocal cords seem to have been frozen as well, since no sound leaves his mouth but the constant chattering of his teeth.

More time passes. The chattering stops as a warm feeling fills him from the inside, and he knows he is freezing to death without being able to do anything about it.

He falls in and out of slumbering, unable to really sleep because of the cold surroundings, but not able to fully stay awake either as his body is too exhausted. When he opens his eyes again for the umpteenth time that night, he notices that the darkness is slowly starting to be replaced by light. A lifeless smile pulls up the corners of his mouth as he watches the sun rise. He bitterly realises that it is the first time he has seen the sun rise, for he would often go to sleep right before it did or wake up only right after. He closes his eyes again, unable to watch the light any longer.

Suddenly a shadow drops over him, making the pattern of colours on his eyelids turn into a total black. As much as he wishes to open his eyes again to see what caused the pretty colours to go away, he cannot find the strength in his body anymore to do so. There are words being called out that he doesn’t know how to understand anymore and other words are called back in reply as something tilts him out of his lying state.

Somehow, his completely numb senses manage to register the touch of supposedly warm hands on his ice cold skin and he faintly realises that a pair of arms is being wrapped around him. Fingers brush his wet hair back and soft lips touch his forehead in a loving gesture. None of these actions, however, can make him will his eyes to open. It is only when his brain registers a stream of familiar words that his body seems to start working again. His eyelids slowly part and he gazes up in the face he has been wanting to see ever since he started running away from the dangerous scene. The moment his eyes lock with the dark pair of the other, he realises what has been said before.

“I told you I would find you.”
